Disability Awareness and Rights: Empowering Individuals with Disabilities

Understanding Disabilities and the RPwD Act

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD Act) 2016 recognizes 21 types of disabilities, including locomotor disability, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and speech disabilities. This act provides a comprehensive framework for ensuring the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities in India.

Unique Disability Identity Cards and Certificates

Under the UDID project, competent authorities issue disability certificates and Unique Disability Identity cards to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). These cards serve as proof of disability and facilitate access to various benefits and services.

The Global Prevalence of Disability

Worldwide, an estimated 13 billion people, or 1 in 6 people, experience significant disability. Sadly, PwDs often face premature mortality and have reduced life expectancies.

Defining Disability: A Holistic Approach

The National Sample Survey (NSS) 76th round defines a person with disability as someone who faces long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments that interact with environmental barriers to limit their participation in society. This definition emphasizes the social context of disability.
